Stocking Up

Lately (probably because we're getting closer to the house finishing) I've been thinking about our first Costco run. We will literally be starting from scratch so we'll need to stock up on all the essentials like toilet paper, paper towels, cleaning supplies, food for the pantry, etc. Seems like it will be an expensive run.

I tried to find a good list online of what we should think about needing but I was only semi-successful. Martha Stewart posted this list on her website but it doesn't seem like a list of essentials for a pantry. Who really needs anchovies and dried porcini mushrooms? Not me.

Here's another list that's more helpful than Martha - What Every House Needs. This lists items for the whole house and thankfully, we've received a lot of our essentials as wedding gifts. The only thing this list doesn't cover is essential food to stock up on.

Here's what I'm thinking we'll need to start:

  1. All-purpose cleaner
  2. Toilet paper
  3. Paper towels
  4. Broom
  5. Swiffer
  6. Dish washing soap
  7. Detergent
I'm kind of tempted to wait to stock the pantry until we actually need that stuff - like flour, sugar, pasta, soup, etc. But then there's the basics like ketchup, mustard, milk, eggs, butter. Do we wait on that or stock up on that too?

What would you recommend we include in our first run?

    Dishwasher Detergent
    fabric softner (not an immediate must have, but still good)
    spices - stock up on your favorite cooking spices, nothing worse then cooking and realizing you need to run to the store

    Also, piece of advice for the first few months, as you work on building your pantry up. Menu's. Write out your meal menu's for the week and go grocery shopping each week.
    And lastly, plan on stocking up on some of your favorites, soups, frozen foods, meats, veggies (and freeze them, we can chat about these off the blog, if you'd like) toilet paper, tooth paste, shampoo, cleaning supplies... anything...stock up on it when the grocery store has it on sale. You will save a ton of money that way and then have a supply when you run out.

    I agree with Katie's advice. Also, some more essentials you may wish to add to your above lists - a dustpan to go with that broom; toilet brush/scrubber; liquid toilet cleaner; Clorox disinfecting wipes (a Costco item for sure!); Kleenex; Cooking spray; Canola oil (or whatever oil you want to cook with); Extra Virgin Olive oil; Bisquick

    It'll definitely be a work in progress over the next couple of months.

    It's such an exciting shopping trip too! Take a picture of your CARTS before checking out :-)

    Go for the big bag of chocolate chips from Costco! Totally comes in handy when you least expect it! :) Oh, and the big thing of pretzels. Delicious and a great snack with a twist-on lid so they stay fresher longer. That's what I buy from there. College student...probably not as helpful as the previous two posts so take it or leave it, ha.

    Costco has some great organic canned beans, tomatoes and organic better than bouillon right now, we just stocked up. There are going to be lots of crock pot stews and soups this winter at our house. And, I have just heard some great reviews about this guy http://www.costco.com/iRobot%C2%AE-Roomba%C2%AE-595-Pet-Vacuum-Cleaning-Robot.product.100010805.html. My friend loves coming home to clean floors after work.

    Remember to get a large bottle of vinegar to clean your new stainless steel appliances. Vinegar is the best!
